This page is dedicated to the life and work of the above wonderful, dedicated, kind and compassionate Veterinary Surgeon who treated many of the animals within the care of the Islamic Humane Society for Animals.
John will never be forgotten. He will remain in my memory forever.
John was an exceptional and very special person not only because of his skills and expertise but because he was also a humanitarian.
He lived above his Practice, known as Magnolia House Veterinary Clinic in Christchurch, Dorset, UK and would treat any abandoned or injured animal including Foxes and all manner of wildlife. He would travel to treat Deer injured on the road rather than leave the animal suffering and in pain. No request was ever too much for John.
He would never euthanize unless absolutely essential.
He had a pet fox called Vicky and once put a matchstick splint on a mouse with a broken leg. When asked: “How is the mouse”, in a strong Scottish accent he would say: “Och, he’s fine but he can only turn left”!
John would operate at midnight on a sick animal if necessary.
His attitude was always positive and he knew exactly the right time to tell you that the time is now right to release the animal from this life and would offer support and reassurance to the owner that the animal would know nothing and would just slip into oblivion.
John battled with terrible health issues but still carried on working throughout until that was no longer possible. He was always cheerful with a keen sense of humour even when ill.
In earlier times he gained a Pilot’s Licence and was also a keen sailor. He also bought an old ice cream van and sold lollies on the streets of Glasgow to subsidise his studies.
He was a down to earth highly skilled and knowledgeable expert in veterinary medicine.
John was such a special person.
His sad passing is such a great loss to many people including clients, friends and family.
God Bless John Nelson Lafferty. May you rest in peace free from pain and suffering.
You were such a special person. I miss you so much.
